Yes, you’ve probably heard this name more than any other trick name in skateboarding. Known for it’s impressive yet simple board movement, it is definitely the most popularized trick in skateboarding. For some reason it has been the most epitomized trick and term in tv shows, pop culture and pretty much anything tied to skateboarding. To most skaters, if you can successfully do this trick consistently, you are able to say you know how to skateboard.

To do a Kickflip, place your back foot on the tail just as you would for an ollie. Your front foot will be a little past the center of the board towards the nose but this trick relies greatly on how well you use your front foot. You want you front foot’s heel to hang slightly off of the board to where the ball of your foot is still on. Next, as you pop your back foot to get the air, at the same time, flick your front foot up and outward in a diagonal kick in order to make the board flip. Wait for the flip to come around and when you see the top of your board under your feet, stick the landing. This trick is all about the front foot flick and timing.

The Kickflip was officially invented by Rodney Mullen in the early 80’s. Rodney was what they called a “freestyle” skateboarder back then. At the time, many skaters either skated big ramps, otherwise known as “transition skateboarding” or they would ride street. Rodney Mullen changed skateboarding in so many ways there is just not enough room to talk about it. Because of him, skateboarding is what it is today. Without him, skateboarding probably would have never progressed into what it has become today.
